The Wisconsin Arts Board (WAB) is pleased to present “Wisconsin Folks: Masters of Tradition,” Saturday, June 3. This year’s showcase celebrates Wisconsin’s rich cultural heritage with performances from five master traditional artists of the 2016 WAB Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program. Joining these performers on stage are their apprentices, poised to carry these traditional art forms forward. We invite you to join us for an afternoon of traditional music, dance, and crafts at the Stoughton Opera House.
Master Artists featured in the showcase include: Malia Lani Chow (Hawaiian Hula Kahiko and ‘Oli—dance and chant), Roberto Franco (Mexica dance), Meenakshi Ganesan (Bharatanatyam – South Indian classical dance), Vong Yang (Hmong qeej reed instrument music and performance), and Dylan Jennings (Anishinaabe hand drumming).
The event will also feature three of the 2016 Master Craft Artists and their apprentices: Karen Ann Hoffman (Iroquois raised beadwork), Robert Schulz (Southwest Wisconsin hand-forged hunting knives), and National Heritage Fellowship recipient Sidonka Wadina (Slovakian wheat weaving).
Craft exhibition begins at 2pm, concert at 3pm.
