"Everyone has these little kingdoms in their minds," says Chris Wood, "and the songs on this album all explore the ways we find peace in them. They look at how we deal with our dreams and our regrets and our fears and our loves. They look at the stories we tell ourselves and the ways we balance the darkness and the light."
Roots music trio featuring brothers Chris (upright bass, vocals) and Oliver Wood (guitars, vocals) along with multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix, the Wood Brothers bring a distinctive flair to their union of folk, blues, gospel, and jazz. Growing up in Boulder, Colorado, Chris and Oliver were exposed to American roots music at a young age by their parents and eventually started their own individual music careers, with Chris finding widespread success in the '90s as one-third of the adventurous jazz trio Medeski, Martin, & Wood and Oliver fronting the Atlanta-based funky roots combo King Johnson. In the mid-2000s, the two brothers' musical paths intertwined and they formed the Wood Brothers with Rix.
Their seventh studio release, Kingdom In My Mind, is a balance of darkness and light, and the Wood Brothers’ most spontaneous and experimental collection yet.
Sean McConnell
Tapping into the broad spectrum of our human emotions and observations is what makes McConnell such a versatile collaborator and sought-after songsmith. He recognizes the dichotomy of "both/and" rather than just "either/or" not only in his personal life, but his creative one as well. It's an artistic and heart-filled approach to viewing the world that McConnell admits started to coalesce on his previous project Secondhand Smoke, and makes manifest on A Horrible Beautiful Dream.
"The quest for whatever this is," he gestures broadly, "is a major, major drive in my life and also in my music. I think that's pretty blatantly on display in this record."
