The Stoughton Opera House is honored to close the inaugural season of “Almost Live” with a celebration of words and music as St. Louis-born fiction writer, essayist, and cultural worker, Lyndsey Ellis, debuts her eagerly awaited novel Bone Broth accompanied by Milwaukee’s Donna Woodall Trio.
Set in a struggling suburb of North St. Louis, Bone Broth excavates the social and familial issues that one Black family and their loved ones must navigate in order to survive.
With a BA in English from the University of Missouri-Columbia and an MFA in Writing from California College of the Arts in San Francisco, Ellis strives to explore intergenerational trauma, hardship, and struggle. In 2016, she was a recipient of the San Francisco Foundation’s Joseph Henry Jackson Literary Award and in 2018, she received a grant from the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund for fiction. _Bone Broth_ is her first novel.
Joining Ellis on stage will be pop, jazz, and R&B singer/songwriter Donna Woodall. Along with her husband Ethan Bender on bass and Bob Monagle on guitar, Woodall creates a unique blend of styles to present lush, intimate vocals. With every performance, Woodall has established herself as a skilled talent and bandleader on the Wisconsin music scene.
Guest MC for this special event will be spoken word artist, teacher, and social explorer, Charles Payne, M Ed.
