Open House Tours, Norwegian Music
Syttende Mai is an annual folk festival in Stoughton with many activities to celebrate Norwegian Heritage. The Opera House is open for tours along with some very special music throughout the day on Saturday.
Opera House Syttende Mai Schedule:
9 AM-5 PM Guided Tours take place throughout the day when performances are not in session.
9:30-10:30 AM Fykerud'n Spelemannslag Hardanger Fiddle Group
This group of musicians play the Hardanger fiddle, Norway’s national instrument. Strung with eight or nine strings instead of a violin’s usual four strings, the richly decorated Hardanger fiddle has a haunting, resonant quality. Film goers might recognize its sound from the movie Fargo’s main theme or from the Lord of the Rings movies’ soundtracks.
11:30 AM-12:30 PM Edvard Grieg Chorus
The Edvard Grieg Chorus of Madison, Wisconsin, takes its name from the famous Norwegian composer, and many Grieg’s compositions are included in the Chorus’ repertoire. The Chorus was founded on Jan. 26, 1925 and was originally known as the Grieg Mannskor, or Grieg Men’s Chorus.
While Norwegian songs are the primary focus of the Chorus, sacred and secular songs are included in its repertoire.
2:00 - 2:30 Charlene Adzima and Friends
Stoughton resident Charlene Adzima is a professional fiddle teacher and performer specializing in styles outside the realm of Classical violin. Joining her will be her students, some of whom perform as the Starr Grass Band and play banjo and Hardanger fiddle (hardingfele) in addition to fiddle. You will hear tunes from Norway, Sweden, Ireland, and America that will make you want to dance!
